Volunteer needs in our community during COVID-19 pandemic

We know you want to help in this time of uncertainty. Thank you! United Way of the Southern Tier is talking to local non-profits about their needs and we’ll update this list frequently. 

Here are local organizations currently in need of volunteers as of March 27:

Blood Drives: March 31 at Guthrie Corning Hospital, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; April 2 at Victory Highway Wesleyan Church, 150 Victory Highway, Painted Post, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; April 7 at Radisson Hotel Corning, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; April 17 at Radisson Hotel Corning, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; April 30 at Radisson Hotel Corning, 10 a.m. to  4:30 p.m. If you are new to donating blood and wonder if you are eligible please visit for eligibility requirements. If you are already a donor please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit to make an appointment.

Corning Meals on Wheels, 144 Cedar St.: Volunteers needed for meal prep (8-11:30 a.m); delivery car loader (11-11:30 a.m.); and meal delivery (11:15 a.m. -12:45 p.m.). Meal prep volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Delivery car loaders must be able to carry 30+ lbs. from kitchen, up a set of stairs and to cars. Faith in Action (Steuben County): Help senior citizens with grocery shopping or by taking them to medical appointments in Steuben County; 12 volunteers are needed. You must have a valid driver's license. Call 607-324-1138 or 607-936-0941, or email

Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, 409 William St., Elmira: Help deliver or prepare meals for delivery. Email or call 607-734-9535. 

Painted Post Food Pantry, 201 N. Hamilton St.: Volunteers needed to distribute at the pantry between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday-Friday. Call Ralph Foster 607-377-7745.

Pantry of Angels, 682 County Route 115, Lindley: Volunteers needed for new drive-up food distribution. Volunteers are needed to direct traffic for up to 3 hours on Thursday afternoons, starting at about 3:30 (4 volunteers). Volunteers are also needed to load grocery bags into vehicles (2-4 volunteers; must be able to lift 40 lbs.). To offer help, call Crystal McCannon at 607-368-6061 or Janet Schroeder 607-742-1594.

Pro Action of Steuben and Yates, Inc. Senior Nutrition Program: Specific need for substitute volunteer drivers for Bath and Hornell. Shift takes about 30 minutes. Deliveries take place on weekdays. To help with the Bath route, call Brandi Gerych 607-776-4310; to help with the Hornell route, call Larry French 607-324-8609.

Salvation Army in Elmira, 414 Lake St.: Volunteers are needed 10 a.m. to noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to pack food bags and to hand out food bags in a drive-thru pantry. Call to volunteer: 607-732-0314.

ServNY (statewide): The ServNY volunteer management system, administered by the New York Department of Health's Office of Health Emergency Preparedness, is a web-based registry of individuals who make themselves available to assist on behalf of New York State during an emergency.
