Letter of thanks from Ron Hatch, President of United Way of the Southern Tier
Thursday, January 27, 2011Each year as the United Way Community Campaign draws to a close, I like to reflect on the highs and lows of our annual fundraising push. This year I am struck by just how much we have to celebrate – most notably, an increase in the campaign -- and how soon.
Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated volunteers and staff, the 2010 campaign ran in a smaller window of time than ever before. This is important, because the sooner we wrap up the fundraising campaign, the sooner our volunteers can begin the process of investing in programs and services that improve lives in our community. My sincere thanks to the organizations that ran their United Way campaigns sooner, or in a shorter timeframe.I am pleased to be able to share in January (rather than March) that the 2010 Community Campaign has exceeded the amount raised in 2009. To date we have pledges and cash contributions totaling $4.415,070 million, and opportunities exist to add to that number. Given the continued economic distress in the nation and some areas of the Southern Tier, this is quite an accomplishment. Every United Way community campaign requires commitment and hard work from our volunteers, staff members, businesses and foundations … and this year’s result speaks to an exceptional effort.
In December, United Way recognized 2010 campaign award winners -- those individuals and organizations that demonstrated excellence in their giving and/or enthusiasm for the campaign. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize all award recipients, including those that wrapped up their campaigns in late December or early January.
These organizations, and all that run a campaign or otherwise support United Way, have demonstrated that they care about the people of the Southern Tier and about improving lives here. If you know someone who works at any of these companies, I encourage you to thank them for their corporate citizenship.
The 2010 Community Campaign will provide critical support for programs and services in the 2011-12 fiscal year – food pantries, homeless shelters and access to healthcare for those who cannot afford it, to name a few. Your gift ensures that children have access to engaging after-school activities, seniors have the support they need to live independently in their homes, and so much more.
Your generosity is appreciated and welcomed all year long. On behalf of the volunteers and staff of United Way, thank you.
