New Board Chair looks forward to tenure
Wednesday, June 29, 2011In April, I proudly began a two-year term as Chair of the Board of Directors for United Way of the Southern Tier. I follow in the very capable footsteps of Peter Wallin, whom I would like to thank for his leadership over the past two years. United Way achieved many successes during Peter’s tenure as Board Chair, despite economic challenges at the local, state and national levels.
I am truly honored to have been asked to chair the Board of Directors, and I look forward to working closely with the very capable staff and Board. This is a critical time, when the needs of our community are rising significantly due to the economy, legislative and budget issues, and other forces -- and the work of United Way is needed now more than ever. United Way makes a very tangible and vital difference in the Southern Tier, and is able to do so through the support of generous donors and compassionate volunteers.
I begin my tenure on a high note, as United Way and the community celebrate an all-time high fundraising record of $4,533,643. This is quite an accomplishment, one that would not have been possible without the support of thousands of individuals, corporations and foundations across Chemung and Steuben counties. United Way has acknowledged these people and organizations, but I would like to extend my own personal thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2010 Community Campaign – especially those individuals and corporations that pledged last-minute support to lift the campaign total, and to the volunteers who devoted countless hours to raising these funds.
This fundraising achievement is important, not only because it shows the commitment our community has to United Way and its mission, but because it enables United Way to invest even more funds in the health and human services programs that get results and improve lives across the Southern Tier.
At its meeting in April, the United Way Board of Directors approved service funding for the 2011-12 fiscal year, including nearly 100 programs and community initiatives such as 211 HELPLINE and the CA$H tax-assistance program. The process by which these funding decisions are made is impressive, because it is entirely volunteer-driven. Volunteer teams review all applications for funding and base their investment decisions on how each program aligns with United Way’s mission and values. Funding for each program is calculated logically and objectively, based on performance and results.
In the coming years, our community and our United Way will face many challenges and opportunities. While some areas of Chemung and Steuben counties have begun to thrive one again, others continue to struggle. I am confident that United Way of the Southern Tier and our entire community will respond, as always, with unwavering commitment to improving the lives of our friends and neighbors.
I am proud to support United Way as a volunteer and donor, and I encourage you to join me this year and beyond.
