United Way will introduce new awards, host dynamic speaker at annual dinner

The 2011 United Way of the Southern Tier annual dinner on April 27 will be a celebration of individuals who improve lives in our community through their support of United Way.

In addition to the presentation of the 37th annual Errol Shand Award to an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime of community volunteerism, United Way also will introduce and present the GAV awards to individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to United Way by Giving, Advocating or Volunteering.

United Way is also excited to welcome guest speaker Robert Egger, founder of the DC Central Kitchen and author of Begging for Change. The DC Central Kitchen is an innovative program that turns leftover food into meals for thousands of homeless Washington, D.C., residents each day, and provides culinary job training for the homeless, addicted or formerly incarcerated.  Begging for Change takes a hard look at philanthropy and offers suggestions to improve non-profits and their impact on the community.

Mr. Egger will discuss the changing face of philanthropy and the role of non-profits as New York State struggles with budget difficulties.

Also at the annual dinner, United Way will introduce the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Brenda Copeland, President and CEO of Steuben Trust Company, will replace Peter Wallin, who is completing a two-year term.

The annual dinner will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. April 27 at the Radisson Hotel Corning; dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $45 per person or $300 for a table of eight. For reservations, call United Way at (607) 936-3753.
