Our Community Matters:
Day of Caring

United Way’s Day of Caring is a day of service where volunteers from area businesses and organizations visit, assist, and complete projects at one of our community’s non-profit agencies and is an opportunity for community members to help others through hands-on experience to see where their donations go and how agency programs are improving lives.

2009 Information

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Day of Caring on June 24.

When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.  That is why we are grateful to the volunteers who helped strengthen our neighborhoods by participating in this year's United Way Day of Caring on Wednesday, June 24

There were 35 projects completed by 42 teams from area workplaces. To see a list of the companies that participated and the agencies they helped click here.

We had more than 300 volunteers in Chemung and Steuben Counties who were painting building, planting flowers, cleaning and sorting, taking inventory and so much more!!

The value of the time provided by the volunteers is worth more than $30,500!

We hope to see even more in 2010!  Consider forming a Day of Caring Team.

Forming a Day of Caring Team

·         Determine a Team Captain who will be responsible for communicating with United Way, the sponsored agency, and the volunteers.

·         Large teams can be accommodated; however, you may choose to break into smaller teams to staff projects. Typically, larger companies recruit multiple teams. Very often, teams are formed based on department, interest, availability, or talent.

·         When everyone wants to participate, and not everyone can, hold a drawing to determine who will volunteer on the Day of Caring, or come up with another creative way to involve employees.

·         Use the company e-mail list or internal newsletter to announce your company’s or organization’s participation in the Day of Caring and to recruit volunteers.

·         Determine your team’s interest. Do they want to work outside? Would they prefer to work inside? Compile a list of questions and use the answers to select projects that will interest all members of the team.

Participation Criteria

·         Identify a group of people who can work on a project. Workers should be at their project no later than 8:45 a.m. (unless otherwise agreed).

·         Select a project that is suitable for the team of volunteer workers you have assembled.

·         Be identified as a participating team on all Day of Caring (DOC) media releases.

·         Coordinate with agency contact person prior to DOC to be sure that all details are addressed.

·         Have all volunteers to sign a Photo Release Form (to be supplied).

·         Help us evaluate your volunteer opportunity by completing the feedback form that we send to the Team Captain.
